Bilingual Programs in DPS

In DPS, bilingual programs offer Spanish instruction in various subjects, including Spanish literacy. At the secondary level, bilingual instruction is delivered in one to two content classes to promote cognitive development comparable to English-speaking peers. Secondary TNLI Programs allow students to engage two or more subjects for Spanish instruction. Students at ACCESS levels 1-2.9 must take at least two Spanish courses, while those at ACCESS levels 3.0 and higher must take at least one. This model enables students to learn grade-level content in subjects like math and science while improving their English and deepening their Spanish literacy through Spanish Language Arts courses.

Research Foundations

The DPS Language Allocation Guidelines' research-backed approaches ensure students receive native-language instruction to graduate college and career-ready. By strategically offering Spanish content instruction, students are better prepared for a transition to primarily English instruction. Multlingual Learners (MLLs) who learn content first in Spanish are more prepared for success in content classes delivered in English. Spanish Language Arts courses further develop native language literacy, which is crucial for becoming bilingual and biliterate and enhancing understanding of content learned in English.
